Crafting a Connected Online Classroom | Dr. Denese Wolff-Hilliard (45 minutes)
Establishing connection and engagement in an online class is crucial for student success. Building connections in that virtual arena starts with the professor’s welcome message and is sustained throughout the eight weeks with notes of encouragement. When lessons commence with a general overview and end with a summary of what was learned each week, students may feel less isolated. By including activities that encourage interaction and collaboration, a sense of belonging can be fostered. In less than an hour, you will discover new strategies to build connections and promote an engaging virtual learning experience to prepare your online students for success.
Dr. Denese Wolff-Hilliard is the Director of Writing and Research Center at Houston Christian University.

Differentiated Instruction from a Faith-Based Perspective | Aldo Prado (45 minutes)
Differentiated instruction is one concept mainly used in K-12 classrooms. It has effectively supported students with different learning styles, backgrounds, readiness, and content knowledge. Christian universities should borrow this concept because it offers a variety of learning pathways within the same classroom and because Jesus Christ (Jesus Christ is Lord!) is the Master Teacher who used differentiated instruction to transmit His message. We can see it across the gospels.
How about taking Jesus’ differentiation strategies to build a college-differentiated classroom in combination with effective research-based educational best practices?
In this session, we will analyze the five fundamental principles of differentiated instruction applied in an educational Christian environment; this session will also compare these principles with Jesus’ differentiation strategies.
Aldo Prado is the Dean of Pasadena Early College and an Adjunct Professor of Education at Houston Christian University.

Using Holography to Teach, Educate, and Research | James Ford, Jr. (15 minutes)
Even though artificial intelligence has suddenly taken a giant leap forward, especially in the educational environment, other forms of technology are sitting quietly and waiting for their time to become the next event to offer education and research that can reach for the stars. Holography is one technological technique that reconstructs a three-dimensional (3D) scene, like Michael Jackson singing and dancing in a two-dimensional (2D) stage performance. In other cases, it has been used to teach the science disciplines. This presentation will offer a more profound or different look at how teachers and educators can use holographic imagery to conduct critical analysis, inform student learning, and how easily it could help students, educators, and others to reach for the stars in teaching, education, and research.
James Ford, Jr. is a doctoral student in the EdD in Executive Educational Leadership program at Houston Christian University.
University Students' Perceptions of a First-Year Experience Course and Their Transition to Higher Education | Joy Oguchi (15 minutes)
This presentation will focus on how the first-year experience course (FYS) impacts students' transition to college. The research explores the lived experiences of students (sophomores) who participated in FYS during their first year in college to gain an understanding of their transition experiences.
Joy Oguchi is a doctoral student in the EdD in Executive Educational Leadership program at Houston Christian University.
Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child: Perspectives of Educators Who Are Also Parents of Public School Children, Regarding Effective Discipline Practices in Urban Elementary Schools in Predominately African American Communities | Ada Whyte (15 minutes)
The purpose of this proposed qualitative phenomenological study is to examine and analyze the lived experiences and perspectives of educators (teachers and leaders) who are also parents of public-school children regarding effective discipline practices in urban elementary schools in two low-income African American communities.
Ada Whyte is a doctoral student in the EdD in Executive Educational Leadership program at Houston Christian University.

Option 6: Hinton 210 - Masters/Doctoral Student Lightning Round
Exploring The Impact of Racial Trauma: Educator Perceptions | Vanencia Lynch (15 minutes)
In 2016, 90% educators reported an increase in racialized climates. Seeing a need, some educators and campuses attempted to provide more inclusive environments for students of color. However, due to a lack of cultural competence and an underdeveloped critical consciousness, more microaggressions of marginalization and racism were implicitly perpetuated. The current proposed research seeks to explore educator perceptions of racial trauma experienced by African American adolescent students.
Vanencia Lynch is a doctoral student in the EdD in Executive Leadership in Mental Health and Human Services program at Houston Christian University.
Effects of Code-Switching on African American and Black Women | Rachel Awe (15 minutes)
The objective of this study is to assess and develop an understanding of the correlation code-switching has on the mental health of African American/Black Women, bringing awareness and shedding light on a phenomenon that has little to no current relevant research. There is some data that acknowledges code-switching and masking has some possible impact on the mental psyche of AA/BW, there is little data and research to show the direct implications and to what degree AA/BW experience/suffer impact from engaging in code switching. The research design evaluates depressive symptoms in AA/BW and its severity and degree when AA/BW experience discrimination/prejudice in the workplace in the form of micro-aggressions and micro-assaults. The research strategy/procedure utilizes mixed methods of data to attain a clear understanding of the degree AA/BW engage in code-switching/masking to assimilate into the corporate workplace environment, such as making alterations to not only their physical appearance but to their mannerisms, style of speech, tone, and attire.
Rachel Awe is a masters student in the Master of Arts in Psychology program at Houston Christian University.
Examining Predictors of Couple Satisfaction | Christina Davila (15 minutes)
The purpose of this study is to examine different qualities that promote the well-being of romantic relationships. More specifically, this research examines the influence of conflict resolution styles, attachment styles, and emotional intelligence, and how these factors interact to predict romantic relationship quality.
Christina Davila is a graduate of the Master of Arts in Psychology program at Houston Christian University.
